This resource provides an innovative method for addressing bullying in schools. This resource gathers issues together in a coherent framework who provide training for the whole school. It provides an INSET training program for teachers to put procedures in place which leave no confusion or dilemmas about what action to take when bullying occurs. It also addresses the needs of other adults and the roles they can play in eliminating bullying.

The second part of the pack provides classroom activities and student worksheets to encourage the development of skills and strategies for dealing with difficulties they may personally face or observe. The material and activities developed for this pack have been piloted and developed with children and teachers over a four year period.

This pack provides everything needed for a program which will enable schools to create a safe environment for students.

ASSERTIVENESS

  1. In pairs discuss what you would do in the following situations:

    a) You buy a packet of biscuits on the way to school. When you open the packet you find that all the biscuits are broken into little pieces.

    What would you do and say if you wish to be assertive?

    b) You have been waiting in a supermarket queue and an adult pushes in front of you.

    What would you do and say if you wish to be assertive?

    c) In the playground one person is always telling others what to do and what games to play. You are going to be assertive and state how you feel.

    What do you do and say?
